street furniture

(these two pictures show the contrast between Hertel Ave present vs past )
the street that i looked at that is designed for pedestrians, and is a large commercial area is Hertel Ave. right after the intersection at starin going west. There is alot of stuff that standing between the business and the road pave ment for one in certain spots there is yards of side walk pave ment and at other areas there is only a few feet of side walk which was hard to identify under all that ice and snow what was what. some of the other things that i noticed like parking direction signs, baby trees, light pole, bus stop signs, red fire hydrants, newspaper dispensers, bike rails, direction signs for businesses/advertisement displays, public trash containers, parking meters, parking lot entrances, street signs, and benches. alot of the street signs that were displayed were for the direction of the public like were people could park and for how long, this is something that i think would be authorized by the city considering that there is alot of commercial activity on hertel but very little street parking. As far as telling the recent stuff from the old stuff its very clear that the trees and other things life the newpaper dispensers, benches, bike rails are pretty recent and probably would not have been seen twenty or fifty years ago. Alot of the stuff on hertel seems a litte recent it dosent seem like this street was set up initally for large commercial use because the business are very close, and there is litte parking available, and also sometime between the business you will notice residents that are still being used or have been converted into business or health care facilities. But now the street may just seem like that average commercial area similar the other commercial streets in America. when assessing what might change about this street in ten to twenty years i think that some of the business might not no longer be there, or maybe even more business whichever one considering the economy. this change would affect teh street furniture to constantly change on a commercial street. All this street furniture might assuem an activity of directing the public to business or making it comfertable for the public to come and shop and look around and beable to travel up and down this street easily. the street furniture seems like it is made of metal maybe not to be there long but to withstand the weather conditions, earlier versions of this stuff was probably made of wood that would rot. since most of the street furniture seems recent one can assume that maybe this commercial area is open to change.

  1. Love the trolley photo! Maybe in trolley days, you didn't need that much parking in a commercial area?
